The SWAYAM-NPTEL Local Chapter at NPR College of Engineering & Technology is established under the aegis of SWAYAM (Study Webs of Active-Learning for Young Aspiring Minds) and the National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) – a flagship initiative by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, and IITs/IISc to provide high-quality online education.
The Local Chapter acts as an extended arm of the SWAYAM-NPTEL platform, encouraging students and faculty to enroll in online courses, complete assignments, and earn certificates from premier institutions like the IITs and IISc.
NPTEL Online Certification Courses
Since March 2014, NPTEL has started offering certification on courses offered in the open online mode. The objective of enabling students to obtain certificates from courses is to make students employable in the industry or pursue a suitable higher education program.
The features are:
- The course enrolment and learning are free while the exam comes for a nominal fee.
- The courses are offered by the faculty of IITs, CMI, IMSc, etc
- Lessons and assignments are released every week. Also, there is a discussion forum in which students can interact with the faculty member directly.
- At the end of the course, an in-person proctored exam is conducted (which is optional) and the student gets a certificate.
Benefits for a student who participates in an NPTEL online certification course:
- Students gain tangible results
- Students can review and assess their progress through assignments (weekly)
- Continuous assessment and interaction with course faculty
- Discussion forum of like-minds to discuss problem areas
- Students get access to mentors Certificate from the IITs, to improve job prospects
Activities
The Local Chapter undertakes the following activities to ensure effective participation and maximum benefit from SWAYAM-NPTEL:
- Course Enrollment Drives Regular sessions to help students and faculty register for current semester courses on SWAYAM/NPTEL
- Awareness Workshops, Workshops, and seminars to introduce learners to the SWAYAM & NPTEL platform, course selection, timelines, and certification benefits
- Mentorship & Support Faculty mentors help students understand course content, submit assignments on time, and clear doubts
- Monitoring & Reporting: Tracking enrollment, assignments, exam registrations, and completion certificates for chapter statistics
- Certification Encouragement Recognition of top performers (e.g., Elite/Elite+ achievers) and internal celebration of learning achievements
